LEVEL 1 - Sailor


Duration: 20 hours
Minimum Age: 11 to 18 years

The Basic Skipper License

The Basic Skipper License (Carta de Marinheiro) enables day cruising within 6 nautical miles of a secure harbor and 3 nautical miles from the shore. Classes are conducted aboard a Beneteau Oceanis 39.3.

Between the ages of 14 and 18, this license allows individuals to captain boats up to 5 meters with a power of up to 30bhp. For those older than 18, it permits the skippering of boats up to 7 meters with a power of up to 60bhp.

LEVEL 2 - SSCP


Duration: 40 hours

The Sailing Skills Certification Programme equips participants to navigate effectively within a 25-nautical-mile radius. Covering various aspects, including navigation, safety procedures, and vessel handling, this comprehensive program provides the skills and certification necessary for confident coastal sailing.

LEVEL 3 - Local Skipper  


Complete your secondary education and secure your Local Skipper's License from Prime School.

Duration: 40 hours
Minimum Age: 16 to 18 years
Exams: 1 exam

This license allows navigation up to 25 nautical miles from a secure harbor and 6 nautical miles from the coast, day or night. Tailored for beginners, the course covers various topics, including navigation, charts, estimated navigation, on-board instruments, tides, collision avoidance rules (RIEAM), communications, rescue, emergency procedures (GMDSS), meteorology, safety, first aid, firefighting, maritime ceremonial, engines, maintenance, environmental awareness, vessel operation, and equipment usage. It can be pursued directly without the need for a Basic Skipper License.
